Lighting: plan the room before buying the fixtures

Lighting · Published · Sparkys editorial
A useful lighting brief starts with how a room is used, then brings fixtures and controls into the conversation.
Describe the moments in the room
A kitchen may host food preparation, homework and evening meals. A shop may need both comfortable circulation and clear product displays. List the activities first so your project team understands the result you want.
Collect references with a purpose
Save a few images and write down what appeals to you: the position of a pendant, a quieter background or a bright work surface. A photograph does not establish how the same fixture will perform in your own space, but it can explain the direction.
Coordinate finishes and access
Share ceiling heights, cabinet plans, furniture positions and the renovation schedule. Make existing drawings available and record decisions still outstanding. Ask the responsible contractor how the work will fit with other trades and access arrangements.
Keep the proposal readable
Separate fixtures, installation, controls and repairs to finishes. Record who supplies each item and what happens if the specification changes. A clear scope helps both homeowners and commercial teams compare proposals and keep track of decisions.
